Peter LevinPeter lives and works in Hamburg/FRG as an Osteopath in private practice. In 2014 he founded the Free Osteopathic University to invite osteopaths and Osteopathy to go through the experience of an university-style discourse. He  offers „osteopathic lab work“ with the famous Swiss therapist and tissue specialist Werner Strebel to practice collaborative investigations and reflections in order to increase the experiential base in Osteopathy. Peter is a member of the  established by his wife, the developmental therapist V.Ava Levin, and the family psychologist Volker Bussmann. Together they offer holistic treatment for children in their office in Hamburg. They  regularly teach seminars on the holistic treatment of  children during the Summer School Faculty for Child Development and Education of the Free Osteopathic University.
Peters practice as well as his writing and teaching focuses on sensory-motor experience and palpable qualities, on proprioception and touch, on building a therapeutic relationship and interpreting the bio-mechanical expression of biological activity. His teaching builds bridges between the medical and the experienced body, fostering a culture of questioning Osteopathy. Peter deepened his experience of the living body and embodied anatomy while training and teaching Contact Improvisation and Body-Mind-Centering. The work of Elsa Gindler is an ongoing challenge and reminder to stay within the realm of our sensual experience and bodily perception: being there with someone else and being yourself in the process, is at the core of Peters  interest in an action and perception based osteopathic approach.
Peter teaches regularly in Europe and North-America, focusing on organ treatment and pediatrics. His goal is to restore a realistic sense of  the holistic treatment in Osteopathy in three areas: embodiment, sensorimotor development, shaping the therapeutic relationships. While his teaching style is energetic and inspiring, Peter combines qualities of touch in the therapeutic relationship with a bio-mechanical interpretation of health and disease. Peter served as co-editor for the „German Osteopathic Journal“ (Thieme Publisher) and published several text books as well as a popular  book on organs as personalities („You are your Organs“). His work is translated into English and Russian.
Peters professional life is shaped by the fascination for the medical as well as the living body. Before becoming an osteopath he studied Sociology, Social Anthropology and Religion in Freiburg, Berlin and London. He is interested in the embeddedness of human nature within the natural world. He studied the phenomenology of the body and the importance of developmental processes in the work of Helmuth Plessner and Jean Piaget. Especially, the interdisciplinary discussions at the Berlin Free University  are an ongoing source for Peters appreciation for an open and public discourse. The lectures of Klaus Heinrich on embodiment and the relationship of inner and outer nature had the strongest impact on Peters understanding of the body and body politics in medicine, religion and culture.  Since then, building a safe haven for critical and creative thinking in Osteopathy is his passion. Peters strongly supports  a university-based self-reflective approach to Osteopathy, combining a professional attitude with personal integrity and the joy of thinking, moving in thoughts while balancing emotions.
